Quick start

What can the ETH Toolbox do?

Members of ETH Zurich can use the Toolbox to register a device. This allows them to connect to the ETH Zurich network.

Who is the ETH Toolbox intended for?

Use of the ETH Toolbox is currently limited to self-managed devices. BYOD (Bring Your Own Device) devices, IoT devices, and servers are not considered self-managed devices.

Install Toolbox

Download the installation package and run it. More help with installation (and uninstallation)

Early Access Programm (EAP)

The EAP releases early access versions that include new features, for example. However, these versions also contain more bugs, so they should be used with caution. You can switch to EAP in the Toolbox options so that the auto-update feature also accesses these versions.

The Right Network

There are various network zones at ETH Zurich. Every employee has access to staff-net, using the realm @staff-net.ethz.ch after their username. More information on network zones

Data collection

By registering, you agree that ETH Zurich may store the following data:

  • System ID (Hostname, UUID, and Serial Number)
  • Operating System Version & Username
  • Network information (MAC addresses, interfaces)
  • Nessus Agent Information (UUID, Version)*
  • SAM Agent Information (Version)*

* if installed

The Toolbox regularly contacts the servers at ETH Zurich to report its current status and receive updates.

Data remains in the database even after the toolbox has been uninstalled.

Opt-Out

By default, the Toolbox sends Warning and Error log messages to ETH Zurich's servers. Performance data from Toolbox backend queries is also collected and sent to ETH Zurich's servers. These two options can be disabled via `User Settings - Send Errors & Telemetry`.
