Quick start

What can the ETH Toolbox do?

Members of ETH Zurich can use the toolbox to register a device. This makes it possible to establish a connection to the ETH Zurich network.

Who is the ETH Toolbox intended for?

The use of the ETH Toolbox is currently limited to self-managed devices. BYOD (Bring Your Own Device) or IoT devices and servers are not considered self-managed devices.

Early Access Programm (EAP)

Pre-release versions are published in the EAP, which contain new functions, for example. However, they also contain more bugs, so these versions should be used with caution. You can switch to EAP in the toolbox options so that the auto-update function also accesses these versions.

The right network

There are various network zones at ETH Zurich. Every employee has access to staff-net, whereby the realm @staff-net.ethz.ch is used after the username. Further information on network zones

Data collection

By registering, you consent to ETH Zurich storing the following data:

  • System identifier (host name, UUID & S/N)
  • Operating system version & user name
  • Network information (MAC addresses, interfaces)
  • Nessus agent information (UUID, version)*
  • SAM agent information (version)*

* if installed

The Toolbox regularly contacts the ETH Zurich servers to transmit the current status and receive updates.

Data remains in the database even if the toolbox is uninstalled.

Opt-Out

By default, the Toolbox sends log messages of the type Warning & Error to the ETH Zurich servers. Performance data of the Toolbox backend queries are also collected and sent to the ETH Zurich servers. These two options can be deactivated via `User Settings - Send Errors & Telemetry`
